Sometimes you don’t realize all the layered subtleties in a memory until much, much later. When I was a kid mom would take us to Aunt Jean’s pool on hot summer days and it was basically heaven: miles of countryside, meals of cantaloupe, pigs-in-a-blanket & pineapple juice, and, of course, the POOL, which entertained us for countless hours. It wasn’t until recently, though, that I realized a more subtle & sensory part of these memories from those clear, hot days: the smell of the sundrenched boxwood bushes in front of her house with the buzz of cicadas emanating from them. This painting is actually of Sea Almond bushes, but as I painted, the soothing sound of cicadas in the boxwoods came to me & I was back at Aunt Jean’s beautiful, old house in the country. These sounds & smells were the subtle backdrop of childhood summers.

Framing tips
Ready-made frame options (may require a custom-cut mat):
12”x16” unmatted
16”x20” with a white 2” mat all around
18”x24” with a white mat that is 3” on three sides & 5” at the bottom (having extra “weight” at the bottom is actually really beautiful!)
